In improv, the magic happens when we let go of the pressure to be funny. Ironically, trying to force humor often blocks the real gold—authentic reactions. When you focus on listening, supporting your partner, and responding with genuine emotion, the audience laughs at the truth. When someone tries to be funny, scenes often feel forced or fall flat. I’ve seen scenes that started simple—one person folding a blanket—and the laughter came when we leaned into real reactions. But when someone jumps in trying to crack a joke, the scene’s fragile reality breaks. So, let’s trust the process—when you stop trying to be funny, that’s when the funniest moments happen.
